Salman Khan’s Role in Reviving Amitabh Bachchan’s Career with ‘Baghban’

In 2003, Bollywood witnessed an interesting turn of events when Salman Khan played a pivotal role in the success of Amitabh Bachchan’s film Baghban. At the time, Bachchan’s career was going through a tough phase, with several of his films failing at the box office. However, Baghban, despite being completed, was struggling to find a distributor until Salman Khan stepped in to support the film.

Produced by Ravi Chopra and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, Baghban was a significant film that had the potential to revive Bachchan’s career. However, initially, no distributors were interested in purchasing the film. Renu Chopra, the producer of the film, shared that despite the film being ready, there was no interest from distributors because of its old-fashioned appeal, especially since many of Amitabh Bachchan’s films were failing at that time.

It was at this point that the makers decided to approach Salman Khan, who was already a well-known name in Bollywood. Renu Chopra recalled that while they knew Salman as a popular actor, they had no idea that he would be so willing to help the film. Salman Khan not only agreed to be part of Baghban, but he also brought in his star power to give the movie the push it needed.

Renu shared an interesting anecdote about the first meeting with Salman. Despite being a huge star, Salman lived in a simple two-room house. He welcomed Ravi Chopra into his home, and even though he had a gym in the same space, his humility and simplicity left a lasting impression. The atmosphere was so down-to-earth that it made Ravi realize how modest Salman was.

Salman was deeply moved by the script and agreed to take on the role after hearing it. He mentioned that he could relate to the character, as he too revered his parents like gods. Salman didn’t ask about money or conditions; he simply agreed to be part of the film and asked where he needed to be and how to shoot.

Baghban went on to become a major success, grossing ₹442 crore worldwide. The film not only helped revive Amitabh Bachchan’s career but also solidified Salman Khan’s position as a compassionate and influential actor in the industry. Salman’s selfless support and his genuine love for the film were key factors in its success. The movie’s financial and emotional impact remains significant in Bollywood’s history.
