Massive 7.7 Earthquake Devastates Myanmar, Thailand, and China: A Region in Ruins and Crisis

By Global Affairs Desk | March 31, 2025

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has rocked Southeast Asia, leaving a trail of unprecedented destruction across Myanmar, Thailand, and southern China. The tremors were felt across thousands of kilometers, shattering buildings, tearing apart roads, and sending terrified residents fleeing for their lives. As the death toll climbs and aftershocks continue to shake the region, the humanitarian crisis is deepening by the hour.

The quake struck just after midnight, catching millions off guard as they slept. Within seconds, entire cities were jolted awake by the earth’s violent shudder. Though the epicenter was located in eastern Myanmar, its impact radiated outward, causing severe damage in border regions of China and as far as Bangkok, Thailand.

This is not just another natural disaster. It is a catastrophe that is already being described as one of the worst earthquakes in recent Southeast Asian history.

The Earth Trembles: First Strikes in China’s Yunnan Province

The first tremors were recorded in China’s Yunnan province, just across the border from Myanmar. Cities such as Ruili, Mangshi, and Baoshan were immediately affected. In Ruili, a bustling border city, buildings cracked, parking garages collapsed, and residential towers swayed dangerously. Panic-stricken citizens ran into the streets as emergency sirens wailed through the night.

Authorities in Yunnan reported two people seriously injured, while hundreds were evacuated from high-rise apartments and shopping complexes. Though no major fatalities were reported in China, the damage to infrastructure was extensive.

Roads in several towns split apart. Cracks appeared in railway tracks, and several bridges were deemed unsafe. Provinces such as Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi also reported tremors, with minor structural damage.

“In 30 years of emergency service, I’ve never seen such coordinated panic across such a large area,” said Li Qiang, a disaster response officer in Yunnan. “It felt like the entire province was vibrating.”

Chaos in Thailand: Collapse in Bangkok Sends Shockwaves

Even more shocking was the earthquake’s effect in Thailand, where the tremors reached the capital city of Bangkok — nearly 1,000 kilometers from the epicenter.

As the ground began to shake, skyscrapers swayed alarmingly. In the heart of the city, a 33-story high-rise under construction crumbled to the ground, releasing a monstrous cloud of dust and debris. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and confusion as construction workers and nearby pedestrians screamed and ran for safety.

“It was like watching a giant fall. One second it was standing, the next it was gone,” said Panida Sutthipong, a local shopkeeper.

At least six people have been confirmed dead, with over 100 others still trapped under the rubble. Emergency response teams from across Bangkok were deployed to the site and worked through the night in a desperate race against time to rescue survivors.

With aftershocks continuing to ripple through the city, there are now growing fears about the safety of other high-rise buildings, particularly those not built to withstand seismic activity.

Myanmar: Ground Zero of the Tragedy

While neighboring countries reeled from tremors, the worst devastation was felt in Myanmar, where the earthquake originated. Rural towns and remote villages near the epicenter in eastern Shan State were flattened. Entire communities have been erased from maps. Roads have split open, bridges have collapsed, and communication lines are down in several areas, making coordination of rescue operations incredibly difficult.

The official death toll in Myanmar has risen to 694, with over 1,670 injured and at
