Born as Jaya Bhaduri, Jaya Bachchan is a successful actress-turned-politician. She married living legend, Amitabh Bachchan in 1973 and willingly picked up her husband’s surname as a suffix right after her wedding. Jaya has been married to Amitabh Bachchan for more than five decades and has two kids with him, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda. However, this time, the actress was miffed upon being addressed by her husband’s name.

Jaya Bachchan reacts on being addressed by her husband’s name

On July 29, 2024, during the parliament session, when Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed Jaya Bachchan by her husband, Amitabh Bachchan’s name, she lost her calm at him. It so happened that Mr Harivash read Jaya’s name from a cue kept in front of him and said, “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please.” To this, Jaya replied:

The man quickly mentioned that he uttered exactly the correct name that was officially registered in the books. However, Jaya continued that some women have started the trend of being known by their husbands’ names as they have no identity and achievements of their own. She was heard saying:

“Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just…”

As the video surfaced online, several social media users called her brave and defended her for standing up for herself. However, a section of internet users slammed her for picking up the right debate at the wrong place. One user penned, “I don’t object to her objection on this generally speaking as an issue, she is right but…Bachachan surname kyun liya.” Another commented, “Speak about women ka astitva and shit! Lekin KWK me bol rahi hai, She likes that her daughter in law, stays behind and quiet! Dogli aurat!”

During her appearance on the popular chat show, Koffee With Karan, in 2007, Jaya Bachchan was asked if she discussed her problems with bahu, Aishwarya Rai, after her daughter, Shweta Bachchan got married. To everyone’s surprise, Jaya lauded Aishwarya and mentioned how the latter stays grounded despite being a successful diva. Jaya could be quoted as saying:

“She is lovely. I love her. I have always loved her. I have never ever seen her push herself whenever we are all together. I like that quality of hers to stand behind. She is quiet. She listens and she is taking it all in. And another beautiful thing is that she has fitted in so well in the family. She knows who are our good friends.”
