Jaya Bachchan’s Powerful Speech in Rajya Sabha: A Call for Support for the Entertainment Industry

In a passionate address during the Rajya Sabha session, veteran actress and Member of Parliament, Jaya Bachchan, expressed her concerns about the declining state of the entertainment industry. Her speech not only shed light on the challenges faced by workers in this field but also highlighted the negative impact of rising taxes and the lack of support from the government.

Bachchan began her speech by urging the government not to impose burdensome taxes on the entertainment sector. She warned that such heavy taxation would cripple the industry and, in turn, harm the livelihoods of many individuals associated with it. “Don’t tax us so heavily that you destroy a vital part of the industry,” she said, urging lawmakers to reconsider the rising financial pressures on this sector.

She also called out the disconnect between the government and the realities faced by people working in the entertainment industry. Citing the example of street vendors who offer free coriander and chilies with vegetables, Bachchan pointed out that such notions of ‘free’ goods were outdated and irrelevant in today’s economic climate. The escalating costs of living, coupled with the added taxes, were making it increasingly difficult for the working class in the entertainment industry, including technicians and daily wage workers, to survive.

Furthermore, Jaya Bachchan questioned the government’s indifference toward the entertainment industry’s struggle, particularly in light of its significant contribution to the economy. “We are one of the highest tax-paying industries in the country,” she remarked. Bachchan also stressed that while government officials may seek out the industry for photo opportunities, they fail to provide any tangible support when the sector is in need.

Bachchan emphasized the industry’s pivotal role in connecting India to the world, with films, music, and entertainment providing a unique platform for cultural exchange. However, the rising taxes, especially the Goods and Services Tax (GST), were pushing single-screen theaters out of business, and making movie-going increasingly unaffordable for the public.

As she addressed the Finance Minister, Bachchan made a heartfelt request: “Please, think seriously about the entertainment industry. We are in a very difficult stage. The survival of many workers is at risk. The situation has become untenable for the majority.”

In closing, Jaya Bachchan’s impassioned plea was clear—support the entertainment industry to ensure its survival and growth. She urged the government to offer relief to the workers who are struggling to make ends meet in an industry that is now fighting for its very existence.

Her speech resonated with many in the Rajya Sabha and sparked discussions about the need for more support for the arts and entertainment sectors. The challenges faced by the industry, as outlined by Bachchan, are a stark reminder of the need for balanced policies that nurture and protect this vital part of India’s cultural and economic landscape.
